HISTORY

WLI was started in 2004 as a leadership development course for Salt Lake City’s west side residents. There are 118 people who have graduated from WLI, and they are currently very involved in their communities through many different ways.

MISSION

WLI’s purpose is to assist residents in discovering their capabilities and furthermore make positive changes in the community.

CLASSES

WLI is held every Tuesday from 6:00 – 9:00 PM starting in September until November at NeighborWorks® Salt Lake Homeownership Center (625 West Girard Avenue (585 North)

GRADUATION

Graduation ceremony will be held in University of Utah campus at the end of the course, and graduates will receive certificate of completion from University of Utah.

PROGRAM

Under the support of faculty members, WLI participants will develop the following skills:

  • Managing a meetingWLI
  • Engaging/informing community through presentations, flyers, media advisories, and public service announcement
  • Engaging local government
  • Writing grants
  • Improving team work in group project
  • Identifying community issue
  • Addressing community issue
  • Celebrate the success of community efforts

Each participant will be able to take on individual projects of interests along with class project, while applying the newly acquired skills.

  • Center for Public Policy and Administration (CPPA) at University of Utah,
  • NeighborWorks® Salt Lake (NWSL)
