NeighborWorks Salt Lake Coordinates Over 60 Volunteers In Community Building Effort that Adds Curb Appeal to Blocks across the County
Salt Lake Count, UT - On Saturday, November 3, 2018, volunteer groups from Veritas Old Mill, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at the University of Utah, and Starbucks came together to help residents in need in the Fairpark, Guadalupe, Popular Grove, and Rose Park areas of Salt Lake City’s Westside. This inaugural Rake Your Heart OUt event provided a meaningful community building experience for volunteers while helping residents and improving the curb appeal of entire blocks.
This event marks the beginning of a new legacy “Rake Your Heart Out” that was presented by NeighborWorks Salt Lake, Starbucks, and Sutherlands . Starting at 7:30 am volunteer teams started trickling in – many tired and eager to lend a helping hand. Thanks to Starbucks we able to provide our volunteers with a treat of coffee and a light breakfast, to get the days events started.
Over the course of two hours, the volunteers raked leaves into Green Waste bins and bags at ten houses across the Westside. Three of the households participating were Paint Your Heart Out 2018 participants, illustrating the commitment NeighborWorks Salt Lake has to Westside homeowners. The event was fast-paced and fun, full of creating leaf piles to jump in and then smush into bags.
NeighborWorks Salt Lake is a local nonprofit organization with a mission to build on the strengths of neighborhoods, creating opportunities through housing, resident leadership, and youth and economic development. We work in partnership with residents, government, and businesses to build and sustain neighborhoods of choice. NeighborWorks founded Paint Your Heart Out in 1985 as a manifestation of its mission in a one-day event: matching volunteers with homeowners who could use some neighborly help to paint their homes to benefit the homeowner, their block, and the strength of our community.
