YouthWorks Program will benefit from $25,000
SALT LAKE CITY, UT: NeighborWorks Salt Lake is the proud recipient of a $25,000 grant from the Starbucks Foundation into its YouthWorks Program, a pre-employment and leadership training initiative for Salt Lake County high school-aged youth. The grant will enable the NeighborWorks Salt Lake to train 18 high school students on financial capabilities, communication skills, healthy relationships, construction, and community service while they earn a $200 bi-weekly stipend this fall semester.
The Starbucks Foundation has a 20-year history of investing in communities across the U.S. and globally by supporting organizations working to create job and education opportunities for young people. With its Opportunity for All initiative, the organization is continuing to expand its focus on three populations – youth, veterans and military families, and refugees. In 2018, the foundation made $1.3 million in Opportunity for All grants to 47 programs and organizations ranging from $5,000 to $60,000. Additionally, Starbucks partners (employees) will engage and volunteer to help those receiving each organization’s services become job-ready and develop skills to continue on the pathway of opportunity.
YouthWorks is a community-based employment training, drug and alcohol prevention, and leadership development program established in 1982 targeted toward underserved high school youth. As YouthWorks Community Builders, students participate in daily job training through real work experiences that contribute to the revitalization of Salt Lake City’s Westside. By working on projects in neighborhoods in which they reside, our youth become aware of existing challenges and opportunities and learn what it takes to invest and enhance the quality of life in their communities.
The Starbuck Foundation’s grant to YouthWorks is a testament to the vitality and relevance of the program, which, after 36 years, continues to make a measurable impact on Salt Lake City’s Westside and attract new investment in our community.
